Engaging in Statewide Housing Dialogue and Exploring New Pathways for Community-Based Solutions
In March 2026, Bay Area Affordable Housing Service Center (BAAHSC) had the opportunity to participate for the first time in the Housing California Annual Conference 2026, marking an important step in engaging with broader statewide housing conversations beyond the Bay Area. The conference was held at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center and brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including government agencies, nonprofit organizations, housing developers, and community representatives.
The conference agenda featured a comprehensive mix of policy discussions, panel sessions, community project tours, and networking events. Topics covered key issues such as affordable housing development, tenant protections, homelessness, and community-based solutions. The structure of the program reflected a growing shift in California’s housing landscape—from addressing isolated challenges toward advancing more coordinated, system-level approaches that emphasize cross-sector collaboration and resource integration.
Across multiple sessions, one theme consistently stood out: the central role of community. Whether discussing housing supply, rental policies, or service delivery models, there was a clear emphasis on community-based implementation. This approach highlights the importance of local organizations in bridging gaps between policy and practice, particularly in ensuring that resources effectively reach the populations they are intended to serve.
Through conversations with peer organizations and industry leaders, several shared priorities emerged. These include improving the connection between policy and community-level access, enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity of services, and promoting more equitable access to housing resources across diverse populations. In practice, advancing these priorities often depends on the active involvement of trusted community-based organizations.
For BAAHSC, participating in this conference provided valuable insights into the broader policy framework and evolving industry trends. It also created opportunities to establish initial connections with organizations across sectors. In the context of the communities we serve—particularly Chinese-speaking populations—language access and information barriers remain significant factors affecting the utilization of available housing resources. Addressing these gaps continues to be an important area of focus.
Overall, this experience not only deepened our understanding of the housing ecosystem in California but also informed our approach to future work. Moving forward, BAAHSC will continue to strengthen its existing programs while exploring more effective ways to translate policy and resources into accessible, actionable support for the community. Grounded in a community-based approach, we remain committed to helping more families navigate housing pathways and move toward long-term stability.
